'Snickers' Date Bark and Solidarity with Palestine

A few weeks ago, I made a wobbly, one-handed reel over on Instagram documenting my need for something sweet to try to take the edge off the grief of this last month.

I wanted to take some small comfort in a layer of medjool dates, spread with peanut butter, drizzled with dark chocolate and sprinkled with chopped nuts and flaky sea salt. It can be kept in the freezer and taken out when I need to eat my feelings.

It can feel very overwhelming, knowing what to do to help in this current time. There are some incredible organisations that can guide you on how best to support Palestine. The Palestine Solidarity Campaign is a great resource to help you understand the historical and ongoing situation and provide you with actions that you can take.

Supporting Palestinian farmers is also a really important form of solidarity, as well as boycotting products made or grown in Israel. I bought the juicy medjool dates that I used for this recipe from Yaffa Foods via eBay for a great price. Zaytoun also sell fantastic products, and run a ‘Tree for Life’ initiative that has planted 198,995 olive trees in Palestine! Another great resource for understanding why boycotts and divestments are important is Ethical Consumer. They have a long history of challenging corporate power through boycotts and divestments and equipping readers with actions that you can take.

Keep marching, keep learning and keep finding joy where you can - it might be in the form of a deliciously decadent treat. But above all, in these times of grief, keep on keeping on.
